I just checked Twitter to search for helicopter activity and before I could even start searching, this popped up: "One person arrested and "a number of casualties" as a vehicle hits pedestrians in Finsbury Park, London, police say"; it happened outside the mosque after prayers.

The attack was on worshippers leaving the mosque. Awful.

There's still a lot of police action. I don't think you'll be allowed very near the mosque tonight, there'll be a police guard and I doubt they will welcome a vigil there. One killed and seven or eight in hospital. Awful news.

Let's hope the perpetrator wasn't someone local. I'd be very surprised if that turns out to be the case.

A helicopter was surrounding the area on sunday evening from 8.30pm...does anyone know why ?

I'm thinking it may just be a coincidence, that it was something else and then it came back after the terror attack.

@Jefke, just that if the van man had been from around here it would have been a problem for the community here, thrown a shadow over race relations in the area, led to more of a spotlight on the area with negative comment, and been quite divisive - that's all. IMHO.

Weston-super-Mare and Cardiff can shoulder the blame instead.

There was a big festival in the park last weekend wasn't there? It was probably to help with crowd control like they do after Arsenal matches.

Couldn't make yesterday's vigil due to little ones' bedtimes but would like to contribute or do something useful, if anyone knows of anything.

I take your point, krappyrubsniff, but I think in this case—that of an an individual apparently acting on his own (not as a member of any kind of association or organisation), possibly as a result of mental problems—it can hardly be a reflection on his local community. Easy to imagine it's a deranged response to recent events.

Up to a point. But the same is true of some of the lone Islamist terrorists who declare allegiance to an organisation when there's no evidence of contact; probably unhinged, but media much less likely to suggest it.

Also did you see the appalling comment by the son of the van hire company owner wishing it had been a tank? His father reacted with outrage and the tweet was deleted. But these actions come out of a world view where people think it's ok to say that kind of thing.

I agree with you on that first point, Kate. As for appalling comments, I know someone who has lived in Stroud Green for decades whose comment was "Now they [the Muslims] know what it's like." This person is a Catholic, so I drew the parallel, "So when the IRA—nominally Catholics—killed people in past decades, an attack on your own (Catholic) family would have shown Catholics 'what it's like'?" The question didn't seem to register. I think it's an example of someone who "experiences" Muslims only through TV news reports of terrorism, which therefore, in her eyes, is what "Muslim" means.
