Part of a surviving painted wall ad from the 1930s or 40s, I'd guess. Where is it, what is it selling, what was the name of the company .... and, blimey, who were they appointed to?
My grandmother, shortly before her death, suggested to me that my generation would be the last to see those old painted signs. To refurbish them would be a bit fake, somehow. Somewhat melancholic.
Yes, they're indeed the lights at the Wells Terrace bus station. Well done all!
My musing is because I am thinking I'm going to have to make this a *lot* harder to catch any of you out. There are obviously a lot of people on this board who are either (a) extremely observant and knowledgeable (b) have a lot of time on their hands or (c) have a lot of time on their hands and are pretty smart with manipulating Google Streetview.
Something to do with the old cinema in Stroud Green Road? - now the John Jones building site - used to be 'Peter Phillips' clothing factory. Was apparently called the Scala and opened in 1914. Yes?
It's not so much the brickwork as what it overlooks, really. A significant event in British cultural history took place here. It was also a big year for the Queen Mother, Charlton Heston, Hitler and King Tut.
Correct! 269 Seven Sisters Road, opened in 1909 as Pyke's Cinematograph Theatre then rebuilt as the entrance foyer of the Rink Cinema (now Rowan's). On 14th June 1923 it was the first cinema in Britain to give a demonstration of the talkies - the De Forest Phonofilms 'sound on film' system, which later became Fox 'Movietone'. Now a Lidl.

Overpainted at least once. I wonder if the loaves were sold in the Dairy, or the shop next door?

Don't know what's worse - how long it took, or that I'm not 100% certain...
