Can I turn off all this avatar shit? I often keep up with the shizzle at work and who knows what folks may choose as their avatar.

Also, the theme for the mobile site is blue. Sort it out.

So, here’s my snagging list:

1) Darken any text that is currently coloured.
2) Investigate why some mobile devices have difficulty with text input (This has never worked on my tablet, and still doesn’t)
3) Remove one (but not both!) of the two ‘new discussion’ buttons

4) Work out why you sometimes need to refresh to see a message that you just posted (mobile only problem?).

Feel free to add to this list.

~O)

Can I get rid of the Avator thing agree with Poxy ! ( which surprises me after he conned me about Parkland Walk and concrete back in the old days)

Not overally impressed with the colour palette but maybe I am old fashioned reminds me of the Scottish Commonwealth outfits for some reason.

Voting is useful. Can we have a vote concerning the folks who used to post and make great contribution who seem to be on extended terms in the prison ? or maybe they just left?

@Ali - have a look here and scroll down. If people prefer the look of any of those then we can try it out!

I'm hoping to have all the text switched to black.

Andy, thanks for all the hard work and for creating one of the best sites around (and David too).

Arkady, good luck, I imagine we all under-appreciate quite how much effort this is for the person running it, so thanks for stepping up and doing so.

My view on the suspensions. If you suspend people, maybe it's better not to publicly name and shame them. Ultimately, some could consider that embarrassing on their return - although I suspect they have thicker skins than that. A short private enforced absence would be enough to yellow card people, surely?

Also that removes the potential for talking about people when they can't reply. That doesn't reflect well and would only serve to make the site look more clubby or cliquey to a newcomer.

A few ideas on how to improve.

Make it easier to post photos or videos that don't have to be hosted elsewhere, ie you could post them to the site. Is that possible? I have never been able to do it, I don't have a photobucket, picasa etc account and don't want to link my twitter or instagram to here, so can never post pictures etc.

Encourage Stroud Green businesses to get involved - we love talking about them, so get them on. we can all see through naked promotion anyway so I don't think that's an issue.

Stick some links down the right hand side of the page to some of the interesting stuff about the area topics over the years. Old maps, old memories, where is Stroud Green? etc.

Also, we should all be less down on things. This site has told me more interesting stuff than almost all others over the years, been a font of useful and useless information, a relatively reliable source of breaking local news and made me laugh, rant and groan. It's far better than most. All of those who post here achieved that, we deserve a pat on the back.
@Papa L

I have, reluctantly, come to the conclusion that you (and others who have made this point) are right. Transparency, in the end, just causes grief for everyone concerned. I won’t be discussing moderation matters here in future except in the most general terms, and encourage others to send me a PM if they wish to raise concerns. For similar reasons there will be no polls concerning these matters.

Thank you for the constructive suggestions:

Alas, the strain on the server is too much to allow us to host images on the site. I know how frustrating it is. I can only suggest that you consider acquiring a Photobucket account or similar. Sorry!

Yes, I have a plan to spend a weekend strolling down the SGR with some fliers. There was some suggestion that we might have a whip-around to fund the printing at the SG BBQ.

The ‘best of SG.org’ links idea is an excellent one, I will give it some thought.

And hooray for your positivity. This is a great civil society tool, to put it in a pretentious way. Thanks for cheering me up about it.
Blue text has been made darker, which hope solves people’s issues? The ‘most recent post by’ field has ended up as white on white, but I’ll have that sorted shortly.
I've begun to implement Papa L's suggestion.

Thoughts on what the list of list of links should be called, what other discussions should feature (with links please!), and where it should appear (e.g. above or below the external links, or the advert) all welcome.

@Arkady, I can't see new discussions unless they've had a comment after the first post. I see subject line and then empty comment box, no first post on kindle and iPhone. Anyone else?
Apologies for the technical quibbles. From what I have read they should be fixed in the next version of Vanilla (the one we have just updated to has, I think, been out for a while), though I accept that is't much help now.

I think you can often fix the mobile device problem by hitting settings in your browser and clicking on the 'request full version of the site' option.

You did it via Gravatar I take it? Odd. You definitely registered with Gravatar using the same email address as at SG.org?

If you're stuck, just click on your existing avatar, and then on the huge 'change picture' icon on the right - you can then upload something of your choice.

Working on it.

We have pulled out a couple of pieces of code that we thought was doing it, to no avail. The new theme alone should have scrapped it. It's entirely possible that the site has developed some sort of sentience, and just doesn't trust you.

There's a real danger that SG.org may launch a nuclear attack on Russia in order to provoke a global Judgement Day, after which the only intelligent life left in the universe will be this forum, recycling old posts in order to bicker with itself.

Maybe.
